Professor John Wiggers

Director, Hunter New England Population Health Professor, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle

As Director, Population Health, Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), John leads the delivery of population health services that seek to prevent the occurrence of communicable and non-communicable diseases and injury. As a Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, John leads research relating to the prevention of tobacco and alcohol related harms and obesity, and to the improvement of health service delivery more generally.

Through his various roles John has implemented and evaluated strategies for improving the provision of evidence-based care and services to the benefit of community members, contributed to building the population health workforce through training and mentoring, and has established an innovative integrated practice-research partnership approach to the delivery of population health services.

More recently John has been appointed to the role of A/Director- Clinical Research and Translation, HNELHD. In this role, John is responsible for establishing and implementing the strategic vision for enhancing the conduct of research across the LHD.
